https://peertube.watch/videos/watch/4eb2a422-32e7-415c-bb57-b567310923d9 AV1 is an open and royalty free codec, recently designed within the context of the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). It was specifically designed for use over the Internet, and was built with Scalable Video Coding (SVC) functionality built in the specification. This makes it a particularly interesting codec to use in WebRTC applications of different kinds, from web conferencing to streaming and more. This presentation will cover how AV1 is used on top of RTP, how SVC is signalled and used within the context of an ad-hoc (and pretty convoluted) RTP extension, and the efforts I had to make to get all that to work in the Janus WebRTC Server. If time permits, I'll show a brief demo of how it works too.
